Summer Programs for Math Majors
Summer Programs for Studying Mathematics
- Summer Undergraduate Mathematical
Sciences Research Institute
(SUMSRI) at Miami University in Ohio
SUMSRI is a program hosted by the Department of Mathematics at Miami University. They seek talented
undergraduate students in the mathematical sciences who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees.
They are especially interested in, but not limited to, under-represented minorities and women.
- The SMALL Undergraduate Research Project at Williams College
The SMALL Undergraduate Research Project is a nine-week summer program in which undergraduates
investigate open research problems in mathematics. One of the largest programs of its kind
in the country, SMALL is supported in part by a National Science Foundation grant for
Research Experiences for Undergraduates and by the Science Center of Williams College.
Around 500 students have participated in the project since its inception in 1988.
- Park City Math
Institute
PCMI is a 3-week mathematics program held at Park City, Utah. The program
includes groups consisting of mathematics educators, undergraduate
students, graduate students, and mathematics researchers. These groups
participate simultaneously, pursuing both individual courses of study and
a meaningful amount of interaction. The rich mathematical experience
combined with interaction among all participants results in greatly
increased understanding and awareness of the issues confronting
mathematics and mathematics education today.
- Director's
Summer Program (DSP) at the National Security Agency
(search here)
(description by participant)
The DSP is the
NSA's premier outreach effort to the very
best undergraduate
mathematics majors in the country. Each summer, they accept
25 exceptional math
students to participate in a 12-week program where they
collaborate with each
other and with NSA mathematicians on mission-critical
problems. The students participating in the program work a broad
range of problems
involving applications of Abstract Algebra, Geometry,
Number Theory,
Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Probability, Statistics, and
Analysis. For the
first two weeks of the summer, lectures on modern
cryptologic mathematics are
given. After the lectures, the students are presented with
about ten current
problems and choose one or two as the focus of their
research. All research is
documented in a series of papers written by the students
near the end of the
summer. Throughout the summer, students develop
mathematical theory, apply what
they learn to obtain real-time solutions, and experience
the success built on
hard work and innovation.

Summer Programs for Applied Math Students
- Research in Industrial Projects (RIPS) held at UCLA
The Research in Industrial Projects (RIPS) Program provides an opportunity for high-achieving
undergraduate students to work in teams on a real-world research project proposed by a sponsor
from industry or the public sector. Each RIPS team is comprised of four students, an academic
mentor, and an industrial sponsor.
Programs for the Summer Before Graduate School
- Enhancing Diversity in Graduate
Education (EDGE)
The EDGE Program was launched in 1998 by Bryn Mawr and Spelman Colleges, with the goal of
strengthening the ability of women students to successfully complete graduate programs in
the mathematical sciences, with particular inclusion of women from under-represented groups.
