Circles and Pairs is a mathematics outreach program in which undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) volunteer to work two days per week with local middle school students. We engage students using two complementary methods:

CIRCLES

Circles refers to Math Circles, which are group problem solving activities that emphasize creativity, collaboration, and discovery-based learning. Math Circles introduce students to fun and exciting mathematical topics that they typically don't get to see in their classrooms. Volunteers guide students as they explore mathematical ideas, formulate conjectures, try various approaches, and communicate their discoveries to their peers.

PAIRS

Pairs refers to one-on-one tutoring in which a volunteer works with a student on topics currently being covered in their math classes. The pair may work together on homework, practice problems, or test preparation. Throughout this one-on-one interaction, the volunteer serves as both an instructor and mentor to the student. We also encourage volunteers to talk with the student about how mathematics is useful in a variety of college majors and careers.
